Schools and groups
Our schools team is five volunteers and a lot of rope. Every programme includes something to make or handle, and nothing that needs a worksheet afterwards.

School programmes
Rope and River
5 to 8
90 minutes
$8 per student
Students walk the 96-metre Long Gallery, find out how rope was made and who made it, and make a short three-strand rope on our replica rope-walk jack. Each student takes their rope back to school. They also handle real tools from the ropewalk and a boat compass from the river.
School Days, 1905
8 to 11
2 hours
$9 per student
A lesson in the Hackling Loft schoolroom corner, run from the 1905 register of Tarrow Bridge School. Students answer the roll as a real pupil from that year, write on replica slates, practise with dip pens and ink, and compare their day with Edith Marr’s.
Reading the Town
12 to 16
2 hours
$10 per student
Students work in small groups with copies of real sources: rate books, the Tarrow Courier, Ada Venn’s photographs and the ropewalk wage books. Each group follows one street or one family through 60 years and presents what they found. Good for history, geography and civics.

Booking details for schools
10 to 60 students. Over 30, we split into two groups that swap halfway.
Tuesday and Wednesday all day, and Thursday and Friday mornings.
Teachers and helpers come free, one adult for every 8 students.
You can eat in the Hemp Store or the Tar Yard if you book it with your visit.
Tell us about any access, learning or medical needs when you book, and we’ll plan around them.
You’re welcome to visit free beforehand to plan. Call us to arrange it.

Adult group visits
10 people or more.
$14 per person, including entry. 75 minutes with a volunteer guide, covering the Long Gallery, the Tarring Room and the Hackling Loft.
$6 per person for tea and a scone in the Tar Pot afterwards.
Any opening day, and Tuesday or Wednesday by arrangement.
Can drop off at the gate on Ropewalk Lane and park on Quay Street.
