About 40 people keep the Ropewalk open, and all but one of us are volunteers. This morning is the easiest way to see if you’d like to join them, before the museum opens to the public at 10 am.
Maren Ashdown, our coordinator, will take you round the front desk, the store, the reading room and the Tar Yard garden. At each stop a volunteer who does that job will tell you what a shift is really like, including the dull parts.
You don’t need to bring anything or decide anything on the day. Booking helps us get the tea right, but you are welcome to turn up. We hold four open mornings a year.

Lionel Brack started on the walk at 15 and was there when it closed. He explains how raw hemp became a rope, and what the job did to your hands.

Hands On: Six Objects from the Store
Handle six objects that are usually in the store, with gloves and a volunteer who knows their stories. Ten places only.
