The ropewalk made rope by twisting three strands together from opposite ends of a long room. Our volunteers built a small working copy of the machine, and children use it to make a 2-metre skipping rope from coloured cotton yarn.
It takes three people to make one rope: one to turn, one to guide and one to walk. Children work in threes, adults included, and each child takes their own rope home. Afterwards there is a skipping contest in the yard, judged by whoever is on the front desk.
For ages 5 to 12, with an adult staying for the whole session. There are 24 places. The session moves into the Hemp Store if it rains, so it goes ahead in any weather.
